Bridge Build in Grade 8
A exciting project in 8th grade is their Bridge Build Challenge. A It is basically a project based learning experience. The students are asked to design the strongest bridge they can, made out of only popsicle sticks and held together by white glue. The finished bridge must be able to span a 50 centimeter gap, weigh no more than 160 grams, and be at least 10 cm in width.
During "The Test", Mr. Drayton adds weight to their structures until...they break. The winner held 176 pounds, several hundred times its own weight. This lesson teachers the students learn about structure design, and the live loads, dead loads and dynamic loads that end up stressing their bridge.
The clear winning bridge by Olivia Williams and Serenity Hill. It held 135 pounds!
2nd place was won by Christina LoPresti, Ibi Marchand and AJ Huth. Their bridge held 87.5 pounds. We had a tie for 3rd. Both Grace Boneu and Sophie Fisher's bridge and Jacob Mullaly and Owen Smith's bridge held 80 pounds.
