Tracking Team Vestas
Nick Dana, boat captain on Team Vestas 11th hour Racing and former St. Michael's student, visited Grade 2 while enjoying some downtime with family in Newport. He answered many questions from the students which covered a wide range of topics such as, favorite leg of the race so far, best freeze dried meal and how many days he’s spent at sea-almost too many to count! He shared stories about the weather conditions encountered during each leg of the race from the rough seas and cold temperatures in the Southern Ocean to the Doldrums and hot temperatures experienced on their way to Hong Kong. One fact we all found surprising was how noisy the interior of the boat can be; Nick compared it to living inside of a drum.
During Nick’s visit today, he became reacquainted with some former SMS teachers. Mrs. Magruder, Mrs. Abraham and Mrs. Cardullo enjoyed seeing their former student back on campus! He spent his fourth grade year right in our classroom.
Nick’s passion for sailing came through loud and clear as he shared his experiences with the children. What a great example for our young students and they explore their own interests, talents and passions.
We look forward to seeing Nick and the Team during their Newport stopover. Charlie R. was hoping his ‘Uncle Nicky’ could arrange their arrival in May on his birthday! Wouldn’t that be a nice present!
