Grade 8's Marble Roller Coaster

Grade 8's Marble Roller Coaster

Engineering Challenge in Grade 8

On Friday, September 29, 2017, while our 5th, 6th, and 7th graders were off campus on field trips, our 8th graders had class in the morning, then engaged in a variety of activities from high school transition preparation, to brainstorming service events and social activities, to creating marble roller coasters.

We were fortunate enough to have this engineering challenge led by Dr. Bonnie Epstein, mother of Hope S., grade 7, and founder of RIMOSA.

The Rhode Island Museum of Science and Art (RIMOSA) is a non-profit organization that is committed to “using Rhode Island’s rich resources in the arts and sciences to create a distinctive, highly interactive, informal learning center.”

The marble roller coaster is an example of how we are trying to foster curiosity, collaboration and communication in our students. 8th graders were given materials and were encouraged to explore and experiment as they created an intricate rollercoaster on which their marbles could travel.
