X Marks the Spot: North and South America
CAT Fourth Grade - Children Are Teachers
One focus of the fourth grade's thematic unit this year is a study of the continents. In September and October, the students used images, interactive maps, books and websites to virtually travel to North and South America. They started their journey through each continent using research skills to locate and compile facts. Using the information found, the students composed expository paragraphs about what they had learned.
During this process, something peaked their interest: an animal, a landmark, a person, a landform. Anything, the choice was theirs. The students explored a variety of sources to become experts on their subject. They then chose a media in which to present their findings. It could be anything from a diorama to an iMovie.
They were the designers of their presentation. At the end of each project, each student presented to the grade. This whole research and design process was shared with their parents on in a CAT presentation on Wednesday.
